Madewell Transport Tote

I had long obsessed over the Madewell Transport Tote in English Saddle after seeing it on fashion bloggers everywhere. When my awesome fiance bought it for me for Christmas this year, I was excited to start wearing it. Only…when I pulled the folded bag out of the box, I saw smooth, cheap, stiff, light-colored leather with really weird stress marks across the height of the bag. As I mentioned in a previous post, they reminded me of human skin stretch marks. So gross. Back it went. I then tried the Cuyana Leather Tote, and the color just wasn’t cognac enough. My fiance convinced me to take another shot on the Madewell bag. Maybe what we got was just a fluke? There were so many rave reviews, after all.

The exchange arrived today. It came in a huge box whereas the first one came packed in a small, flat box. I pulled out a sealed plastic Madewell bag with this tote packed pristinely inside. Already promising! Then I saw the leather. It was immediately and obviously completely different from the first bag I received. This leather was saturated and a great cognac. It was also very pebbled with zero stretch, I mean stress, marks. The handles were also not dark — they were the same color as the rest of the bag. WTF? Must be a completely different batch? How could the quality be so inconsistent? Not to mention, I get that the first one was ordered during the holiday season but I can’t believe Madewell would ship me what was clearly a return, especially given how crappily it was packed and shipped.

I wish I took a picture of the first bag for comparison, but I was so turned off I stuffed it back in the box and looked for the return label. Now, with this new bag, I feel like I won some bag lottery because I finally get all the raves about this bag. It’s gorgeous, the leather is the perfect amount of softness/stiffness, so that it’s supple but holds its structure, and the color is a perfect cognac. The leather isn’t super processed either — you can see the variations in color across the bag, so it adds a lot of character to the bag. Love it, love it, love it. Now I just want it monogrammed! If you’ve been eyeing this bag, take your shot at the lottery and see if you can score a gorgeous beauty here for just $168.

Born Famke Clogs

I’m a flats wearer. I’ve tried so-called “comfortable” heels like J.Crew Etta, I’ve tried heels from known comfort brands like Clarks and Born, I’ve tried to find heels with substantial platforms, and I’ve even tried orthotic shoes (FWIW, Orthaheel Tide sandals are ultra comfy). None were that comfortable after a few hours or after some quick NYC walking. I resigned myself to ugly, matronly flats forever. Then I found these.

Let me just say — Most. Comfortable. Shoes. Ever. Ever. So comfortable that for the first time, I want to stock up with multiple pairs of every color. So insanely, crazy comfortable and cushiony that I actually hesitated blogging about this before I got the chance to hoard every pair out there in my size. 10x more comfortable than any of my flats because I no longer felt the hard concrete ground as I walked. It’s an instant lift, I looked like I instantly lost weight, and I felt confident yet comfortable. Worth every penny, all $85 of it. None of the other “comfort” shoes I purchased in the same order compared.

Born Famke

Born Famke – $85.99 on sale! Also available in Black. 113 5-star reviews on Zappos!

3.25″ heel, 1.25″ platform. Super cute under jeans/pants, even cuter with tights and skirts/dresses. I’ve received tons of compliments on these. Leather lining is a great plus — no stinky moisture even if you run, and yes you can run in these! Since the Born Famke only comes in this taupe color (Zappos calls it “dark brown leather” but it’s as taupe as this picture shows) & black, I’ve been obsessively trying to find any other Born shoe with the same platform +  heel structure since I’d imagine they’d be just as comfortable. Here are some:

Born Dollie

Born Dollie – currently only $69 on sale! Also available in Black. 16 5-star reviews on Zappos!

Born Curran

Born Curren – $100. Also available in Black. 11 5-star reviews!

I will certainly be buying both pairs, probably in black also. I may end up only wearing these and some variation thereof for the next decade. Versatile, flattering, and most importantly, extremely comfortable. Now go buy yourself a pair or two here at Zappos!

J.Crew Hughes Satchel

I’ve been on a J.Crew bag kick lately — maybe it’s the steep extra 40% off sale discount that keeps tempting me, especially when they keep adding great bags I had already been eyeing to the sale. The Hughes Satchel is one of those. Originally $298, now $199 with extra 40% off sale =  $119. You can’t beat that.

I first saw it in the catalog in blue; it immediately caught my attention because after being a bag aficionada for so long, I’ve pretty much seen all the shapes and variations thereof out there…but this one, I haven’t. It’s very unique, and the color was so pretty for winter.

Coat – J.Crew Stadium Cloth Cocoon Coat (on sale!), Shoes – J.Crew Strappy Pumps

I also loved it in red (or burgundy), but having just purchase the Claremont bag in the same shade of red, I was hesitant.

Then I saw these bags in person and was uncontrollably drawn to the red. It’s so eye-popping and deeply saturated in hue. Reminds me of the super old school Rebecca Minkoff Matinee in Wine. However, I felt like I was carrying a lunchbox as the leather is stiff like the Claremont so it is a relatively structured bag. It was adorable with the gold accents, but I just couldn’t justify another red bag. Also, I had hoped to carry this in the crook of my arm and the drop of the handles seemed a tad short over a winter coat. Anyway, if you have any interest in this bag, now is the time as it is on massive sale here at just $119!
